The Movies
French films are admired and loved by film buffs the world over, and Paris has been the backdrop for many great love stories - with certain unforgettable embraces. The following offers a chance for lovers of the silver screen to re-enact their favourite love scenes. For those unfamiliar with the titles, it also serves as an excellent introduction to French cinema.


Diva (theatre de chatelet)
1st arrondissement, Théâtre du Châtelet, Métro Châtelet
After enjoying a performance at the Théatre de Chatelet, when the audience has left, climb up onto the stage and re-enact the final kiss of the Jean-Jacques Beineix film. Make sure you bring the soundtrack to play in your headphones and if you want to go the whole hog steal yourself a postal workers uniform…..one thing, be careful of stage fright!
Violette et François (palais royal gardens)
1st arrondissement, Gardens of the Palais Royale, Métro Palais Royale
Early in the morning, beneath the arcades at the Palais-Royal gardens, Francois (played by Jacques Dutronc) drives up on his Solex. Violette (Isabelle Adjani) runs towards him and throws herself into his arms. In this 1970s film by Jacques Rouffio, Isabelle Adjani and Jacques Dutronc portray an explosive couple. If you don't want to get arrested just stick to the kiss scene!
Les Amants de Pont Neuf (Pont Neuf)
1st Arrondissement, Pont-Neuf, Métro Pont Neuf
Re-enact the crazy dance scene portrayed by Denis Lavant and Juliette Binoche in Léo Carex's film. Waltz along this beautiful bridge, partner in arms, whilst the fireworks of Bastille Day light up the skies above your head!
Bitter Moon (square Jean XXIII)
4th arrondisement, Square Jean-XXIII, next to Notre Dame Cathedral, Métro Cité
On a foggy morning sitting on a bench in the square Jean XXIII Peter Coyote massages the feet of Emmanuelle Seigner. Romain Polanski, director of 'Lune de Fiel' has immortalised this scene for all aspiring lovers. Just choose a bench between Notre Dame and the Seine and massage to your heart's content. Make sure you're there at sunrise.
Charade
5th arrondissement, Quai de Montebello, RER station Saint-Michel-Notre-Dame
In 1968 Stanley Donen brought Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn together for the first time on screen. Audrey Hepburn plays a women who finds out that her husband has been murdered. Four of his army buddies are convinced she knows where her husband has hidden his gold bullion. Cary Grant follows her to Paris and offers to help her out, but she doesn't know if she can trust him. After a famous scene where Cary Grant takes a shower fully clothed they witness a lovers scene on the quai de Bourbon. A few minutes later, on a boat, they exchange a kiss. The film was all shot on location - so make sure you buy a ticket for the love boat now!
Un Monde Sans Pitié (Luxembourg Gardens)
6th arrondissement, Luxembourg Gardens, RER Luxembourg
In this 1989 Eric Rochant film, the main character Hippo (Hippolyte Girardot) is smitten with the workaholic Natalie ( Mireille). However they manage to find the time to kiss in the Luxembourg Gardens with the Pantheon as a backdrop. The kiss however is short lived as Natalie has to return to work which evokes angry scenes from Hippo. Let's hope you will have more luck than Hippo!
Subway (Rer Auber)
9th arrondissement, RER Auber
In the corridors of this vast underground station at the bottom of the centre staircase, Héléna (Isabelle Adjani) kisses Fred (Christophe Lambert) as a reply to his question "don't you love me just a little?" Try to avoid the tragic ending of this Luc Besson film in your re-enactment!
Chacun Cherche son Chat (Pause Café Bastille)
11eme arrondissement, Pause Café 41 rue de Charonne, Métro Ledru-Rollin
In this true Bastille neighbourhood you will meet a pretty girl in front of the Pause café and give her your number along with a kiss on the neck! In Chacun Cherche son Chat, this is exactly what happens between Benoit and his neighbour Cloé. She then flies down the rue de Charonne to which the locals in the bar proclaim "Paris est Blonde"!
Last Tango in Paris (Métro Bir-Hakeim)
16th Arrondissement, Métro Bir-Hakeim
A slightly more challenging scene to re-enact, indeed when this Bernardo Bertolucci film was released in 1972 the heated scene which pits Maria Schneider against her husband, Jean Pierre Léaud led to much debate. The scene starts with a fight scene on the Bir-Hakeim station which eventually ends with them falling into each others arms. The two lovers then kiss, sitting on the ground…..go on give it a try!
J'embrasse pas (Chalet Isles, bois de boulougne)
16th arrondissement, Chalet des Iles-Bois de Boulogne, Métro La Muette
Although, as the title suggests, there are no kissing scenes in this André Téchiné film, there is a very romantic scene that takes place in the Chalet des Iles restaurant on an island in the Bois de Boulogne. After spending a night in a police station the two prostitutes, played by Emmanuelle Béart and Manuel Blanc, end up alone in the sumptuous hall of the restaurant. Emmanuelle Béart who has her heart on becoming a singer, gives her rendition of Sophie de Nantes. After leaving the restaurant on a small boat she gently asks "Would you like to sleep with me"…..from here on you can use your imagination
The 400 Blows (Place de Clichy)
17th Arrondissement, Place de Clichy, Métro Place de Clichy
This is indeed the best place for an adulterous kiss ! Just in front of the railings at the Place de Clichy metro station. Recreate the famous scene from Truffaut's film which won the Palm d'Or at Cannes.
Amélie (Sacré Cœur, Canal Saint Martin)
18th Arrondissement, Sacré Coeur, Métro Anvers or Abbesses
Send him on a treasure hunt in order to find you. If he can't he doesn't deserve that first kiss! Find a piece of blue chalk and draw arrows on the steps that lead to the Sacré Coeur. That will lead him to the panoramic telescope in front of the church. Position it so it points to you who have positioned yourself at the carrousel bellow. As he makes his way down dodge and hide, lead him on a wild goose chase until you feel he deserves that first kiss!

This magical theatre is one of Paris's most famous, and a ideal place to watch a romantic film. Stars twinkle in the ceiling above your head thanks to a crescent beam of light glancing off particles of glass. A grandiose cinema fit for a king and his queen!
La Pagode
7th Arrondissement, 57bis rue de Babylone, Métro Saint-Francois-Xavier
This cinema was built literally on the foundations of love. Indeed the owner of the famous Bon Marché department store, Monsieur Morin, was deeply in love with his wife who couldn't resist any Chinese or Japanese imported goods. Ever ready to please, Monsieur Morin commissioned an architect to build a real pagoda in their garden. The mistress of the house threw lavish parties here and the couple would come dressed as emperor and empress. However the year of the opening she left him for another man! The Pagoda is now devoted to screening art house films in the most exotic setting!
